Catalonia Playa Maroma, Mexico

Catalonia vacay at Playa Maroma was so nice!  Wayne and I were thrilled to get away and jus be together.  This was supposed to be our Israel trip time, but that got postpones again...so we had the time off and went to Mexico instead.

Day 1. Travel day

Getting layover flight changed to a direct to Cancun flight was a blessing.

3 pina colada’s upon arrival.  We Like the resort.  There’s a long rain forest walkway that connects the main building to the pool and beach.   There are many animals that live in the trees. We saw a lot of coati’s. Really darling baby ones. Looks like a cross between a raccoon and a rat.  We were greeted with a Happy Anniversary on the door and chocolates and champagne and flowers. Our friend Linda set the trip up for us and told them we were VIP. So fun.

Day 2: sitting on beach under palm trees perfect temp. Cooling breeze.

More pina coladas and endless Pepsi light.  Many coati’s and their babies climbing trees and scurrying around.  We also saw a spider monkey at tops of trees.

Day 3:  Went into Playa del Carmen for bottles of Mexican vanilla and insulated mugs and diet soda and zpacks.  Got a zultanite ring for my birthday. It changes color depending on the light.  We got sucked in and lied to- “I’m your waiter at the Catalonia.” What?!?  It was a line -he saw our Catalonia resort bracelets and we bought in.   Had the best Shrimp tacos, chips, pick and Guacamole at ChacPel.  Wanted to save a Mexico’s whole economy. I didn’t care if I paid too much. Here take my money! We have so much. They have so little and with no tourism for a year, they are all really hurting. It’s eye opening.

Day 4:  Wayne continues to battle with the air conditioner. Room not cool enough.  Rabbit towel animal on our bed.

Lovely, relaxing day on the beach.

Add iguanas to our list of animals seen here.

Day 5:  Another day of doing nothing much.  Laying under palm trees,in the cool breeze, watching the ocean and reading. Delightful. Switched to strawberry slushees instead of pina coladas.  Night swim = mosquitos!!  They are very attracted to Wayne.

Day 6:  a full body massage paid for by Truman is the highlight of this day. Another day of relentless sunshine. Cool ocean breezes. Shady palm trees and book reading.   We got our Covid tests scheduled for Monday.  Tapas restaurant is our favorite so far.   Mayan king towel creation.

Day 7:  back to Playa Del Carmen for Dia de los Muertos figurines for the fam.  Huge down pour. We ran into a delicious fish restaurant called El Pirata. Garlic shrimp. Guacamole, pick and chips. Delish! We have to leave the resort to get real Mexican food since the resort is very European. 4 more random people told us they were our waiters at Catalonia in an effort to get us into their stores to buy something.   Thunder storms galore!   So fun to watch the lightening and rain and hear thunder.  I’m glad we only have one afternoon and evening of this though.

Day 8: Back to the beach and reading and so much Sargoso— seaweed.  The beach is easily twenty feet wide and a foot deep with it.  The winds and the storm have washed a ton ashore.  It’s really a mess and the equipment they have here for the resort to get rid of it simply does not keep up.  It’s nuts!   We tried our final resort restaurant- Japanese food.  It was fine. Basically we have not found much food to get jazzed about unless we go eat real Mexican in Playa del Carmen.   It’s okay- we have as many pinada’s as we want.

Day 9:   Glorious sunshine. We have each read/ listened to 5 books while here. So much more sargoso sea weed has washed ashore. The moving equipment can’t keep up so they have brought the big guns - a  front end loader and a dump truck and even after scoop after scoop you can’t even tell.   Atleast the seaweed is soft and not spikey. Our cute room maid has done towel animals and flowers for us every day. She even fashioned the curtains a special way. We had our final tacos al pastor and pinadas on the beach. So breezy, beautiful, tranquil and relaxing.  One last soak in the pool.

Day 10:  up early to have a full day of travel. First Mexico City for a layover and finally home.

Father's Day

Father's Day was great!   I love thinking about my dad and Wayne's dad of course.  Such good men.

My dad always announced “Flexible schedule” at the start of every vacation. He would call out “Kerloo kerloo” to find us in a crowd. He always wore shoes and wanted all of us to have shoes on in case of a natural disaster.
He called me “lead foot” because he thought I was a speeder when I drove. And I was his favorite. Dad was a spiritual and a kind gentleman. I miss him everyday.

Tom - was a hard worker and was always doing service.  He held 3 jobs at all times to support his family of 9 children.  I never saw him sitting still...he always had something he was doing.  He loved the cabin and being outside in nature.  He had such a good heart.

We celebrated a day early cuz Wayne and I had to catch a plane to Mexico on Sunday.     The kids were so thoughtful and got Wayne a nativity from Africa.... it's really cool.  We had a steak cookout at the Buzelli's.

I love watching my boys "dad."  They are all kind and caring and just love their children so much.
